How do I exactly use Groups? It doesn't work as expected.

These are Groups we've setup in the CRM: http://awesomescreen....com/06e1grud21
I belong to the Director Group where as a user X belongs to the Sr. Managers group.
I've created a contact and set Read/Write access to Owner and Users in Sr. Managers group - http://awesomescreen....com/0661grut91
But user X can still see the contact.
The only way user X CANNOT see the contact is when I change the permission to something that is LOWER than Sr. Manager (say Executive). This is contradictory and reverse of what should happen.
What am I doing wrong? Is the hierarchy & permission propagation of the Groups system reverse of that in Roles?
