Hi,

Is there any interest from the developer community in working together to create a dead-simple email extension for the community edition?

1. What are the requirements?

2. Who wants to help and how ? ( coding, documentation, etc)

3. Is anyone willing to finance/contribute a bounty, if so how much?

If you are a seasoned PHP developer and want to get some experience developing custom mods (with guidance) here is a chance to help out and contribute while gaining some training and  expert skills on the platform.

you can also help if you have other skills, e.g.:

  • end-user
  • design
  • analysis
  • documentation
  • testing
  • mercurial/bitbucket admin
  • training
  • system administration
  • project administration
  • general support
  • email expertise (Postscript, Thunderbird, Gmail, etc)

Just indicate your skill and interest in this thread.

Proposal: (Scope)

I.  Outbound email enhancement from within Zurmo to external recipient

    A. replace "System User" with actual email address of the sender

    B. ability to optionally save sent emails to:

         1. User

         2. Contact

         3. Account

         4. Opportunity

    C. ability to display sent emails in:

         1. User inbox

         2. Latest Activities portal

             a. Contact

             b. Account

             c. Opportunity

    C. ability to forward and reply to saved emails

II. Inbound email

    A. ability for external sender to directly email zurmo user

    B. ability to save email from external sender to zurmo user inbox

    C. ability to attach received emails from external sender to

(I.)(B.)

    D. ability to display received emails from external sender for

(I.)(C.)

III. Thunderbird email client

    A. facility to tag and resend emails in Thunderbird client and send to Zurmo for saving against any of:

(I.)(C.)

If there is enough interest and this approach works-out,  maybe we can get some traction on some other badly needed enhancements for the community edition....

Please share your thoughts....

Great idea. I know there is a plugin for vTiger and Sugar that do this.

https://wiki.vtiger....nderbird_Plugin
I know that the main Zurmo developer began with Sugar.

The question is how hard is it to adapt this plugin to work with Zurmo.
I'm not a coder- but- I do like the way CiviCRM funds things- with their "Make it happen" campaigns- https://civicrm.org/make-it-happen

sort of like a kickstarter for add-ons.

I'm in for a $100 to get started.

Great! @TheNextWave  Did you want to help in any other way? ( you can be the finance guy :)   Thought we might want to keep our options open while we nail down the scope of work, but will definitely check out the plugin you mentioned.  Hoping we can attract some diverse expertise to the proposal , and implement the best-of-the-best ideas. Was thinking of having a quick on-line web conference after we see who else has interest...

I can help with documentation-

may be able to write a UX spec.

I'm not deep pocketed enough to fund this.

I'm most interested in figuring out how to get rid of the system user email at 4am...

It should not cost much. By "Finance guy"  I meant we need someone to keep track of the contributions and collect and distribute the bounty..

We would be interested in helping as well.  Not developers, but we have good experience with project management, design, testing and training.

Josh, Darren, That's great.  Let's keep the thread running and troll for a few more folks, for a week or so, then I'll send out an any meeting.

We still encourage anybody to post or comment on the requirements, even if you can't help out.

Hi,

my company is willing to dedicate some developer time for this project. We're interested in inbound and outbound email integration only, not in Thunderbird/Outlook integration. We have developers with Yii experience but we would highly appreciate guidiance for custom modules development - we've made only few small patches to Zurmo so far, the learning curve is quite steep.

Regards,

Kuba

Hi,

we don't have any specific requirements.

Quick thoughts:

  • The main objective is usability for our sales people - we don't want to force them to do unnecessary manual steps.
  • Ideally, the emails would be in both users' mail account and zurmo.
  • We don't want to archive all emails in zurmo, only the important ones.
  • We're using google apps so there are two possible integrations: widget or more general bcc/imap etc.

I know there is a PRO version where google apps integration is included. I've seen introductory blogpost and it looks great. Unfortunatelly licencing per user/month is unacceptable for us. We would be ok with premium paid plugin which was few times sugested in the forums but always declined.

Our motivation for this project is both to have email integration and to learn how to create custom modules and extend zurmo.

Regards,

Kuba

Windsor, thanks for getting this started.

Improvements to the email functionality within Zurmo would be excellent. I'd love to assist with some feature design. I could probably contribute some time to development as well but despite my involvement with Zurmo over the past year I am still not completely sure of how everything works. I'd need quite a bit of assistance at the front-end to get moving.

I've done some basic stuff in Zurmo such as creating custom field types (for example, a direct link to an external record in another database). I've also added another panel type to Zurmo (show first, and collapse the rest by panel so each panel can be viewed quickly instead of just a "more" link).

I haven't used Thunderbird in the past but looks like it could be a good solution to supporting multiple email backend. I had thought tie-in to something like Zimbra would have been nice since but it wouldn't benefit as many users. I imagine building extensions for Thunderbird is similar to creating extensions for Firefox?

Nice Chris!  No worries.  We will get everyone involved up to speed, and hopefully we can all learn something from each other. Good to have you on board.

We'll keep this thread up for another week and see how much more interest we can generate.  Until then, please everybody, PM me your email addresses, so that we can setup a kickoff meeting by web conference.

Regards,

W.

From the response so far, looks like team is mainly in US and Europe.

So for the kickoff I am proposing Monday, March 3 at 11:00 AM EDT (GMT -5)  which is 12 noon Central time and 4:00 PM for GMT - is that right?:)

If anybody can not make that time, please let us know with some alternate times, and we will make some arrangements!

We will be using anymeeting.com for the webconference. (its like webmeeting but free and works on Linux).  I will send invites out on Sunday evening.

Regards,

W.

Hi,

I just came across this thread and therefore missed the meeting. As an official Zurmo Partner in the Netherlands we are always interested in helping cool zurmo community initiatives. What was the outcome of the meeting? Any concrete plans, means of communication, etc?

I am a technical consultant / developer, so I could donate some time where my schedule allows it.

Post a reply or send me a PM and we'll see what we can do!
